Fracture & Trauma Care

Treatment for broken and badly injured bones, from plaster and splints to surgical fixation.

What brings people in

  • A bone you heard or felt break
  • A limb that looks bent, shortened or wrong
  • A fall in an older patient with hip pain
  • A wound you can see bone through
  • Swelling and bruising that spread fast

What is done here

  • Plaster casts and splints
  • Closed reduction and casting
  • Surgical fixation with plates, screws or rods
  • Intramedullary nailing for long-bone fractures
  • Fractures that are not healing
  • Follow-up care while the bone mends

What the visit is like

A fresh injury is seen on the same day. The bone is set, or surgery planned after an X-ray, and you are told exactly when to return and what recovery will look like. Call the clinic number first if you are unsure whether it can wait.

Questions about this treatment

Can a fracture be treated without surgery?
Many can. If the bone can be held in the right position by a cast and the ends sit squarely, surgery adds nothing. Your surgeon will tell you which case yours is and why.
How long does a bone take to heal?
Most take six to twelve weeks, and longer for some bones and some people. You will be told your own timeline and when you may put weight on it.
What should I bring for a fresh injury?
Any earlier X-rays or reports, a list of your medicines, and the clothes or footwear you had when it happened if it may matter. If you have been unconscious, nauseous or confused after a head injury, go to an emergency department rather than the clinic.
