What the visit is like
You will be examined lying down, standing and walking. Your X-rays are reviewed with you so you can see what is worn. The options, their recovery, and their risks are put in plain language, and the decision is taken with you rather than for you.
Questions about this treatment
When is a hip replacement the right choice?
When pain and stiffness have stopped responding to treatment and are limiting the life you want to lead. This is a judgement made with you, over one consultation or more, not a threshold crossed by itself.
How soon will I walk after the operation?
Most patients take their first steps the day of or the day after surgery with support. Walking with a frame or stick until you are steady is normal, and physiotherapy continues at home.
Can I drive and travel afterwards?
You will be told when it is safe to drive, which is usually several weeks away and once you can control the leg properly. Air travel carries its own guidance you will be given in writing before you leave.
